A Journey Through Time

The Maid of Cefn Ydfa

This project has been my biggest one to date. Although I have only come out with 8 outcomes I feel like I could (and I want to) continue with this project. During this project I have experimented with things I never had before, like text on images, visual metaphors, and portraying a true story through images. I took a lot of images and experimented with different text on them to see which ones worked the best and was the strongest. After one group crit, I found that the images where the text has a very tentative link to the background image worked the best as it makes the viewer want to understand what it means therefore either coming up with their own conclusion or to do the research on The Maid of Cefn Ydfa. I did come across some dead ends when completing this project but in the end they directed me in the right direction.

Something I would improve on the project is my timings- I did a lot of research on the story that I didn't focus on the images as soon as I should have. I had to do a last minute shoot which would have probably not been as last minute if I had started to just shoot some images instead of just writing down what I wanted to shoot. I realised my mistake after reading an interview with Jack Davison, he spoke about when he was teaching and he said “They were all writing down ideas and planning projects, but not shooting. I kept telling them, ‘You need to make all your mistakes now," which is what I should have done. Although I did manage to get it all done on time I still could have equally spread across the research and physical shoots through the three weeks.

I believe that these images are very successful, I am proud of them. They aren't perfect but that could be symbolic of the story as that isn't perfect either- it's a tragedy. I have successfully portrayed the atmosphere I wanted too, with the dark shadows and highlights. The text adds some dramatics to the images too. The images are displayed in an order but if you don't know the story then you don't know the order which I quite like- it's kind of a secret understanding between the people who know the story which I find is fun and different. It speaks to a specific audience.
