A Journey Through Time

Writer's picture: SHANNON ROCHESHANNON ROCHE

After looking over my dirty drawings I began to think about where to take the images. To do this I went on a walk around campus until I found the best spot. I took the images of the hearts and nature first as I didn't really know how I would make and position the people in the correct way- I needed to think more on that.

I stuck to my dirty drawings partially, they acted as a good starting point but as I got in the flow of taking images more ideas came to me in the moment. Here are some of the outcomes from that shoot:

These images were successful but some just didn't work with the story and what I wanted the look of the images to be.

I did a but more research on images when I remembered an artist from Seamus' first presentation called Ed Rushca who adds text to his images. I then began experimenting with that idea. I already had keywords picked out of the story from my planning in my sketchbook so all I had to do was pick a font and colours which would work well with the images. The font I went with was Didot as it stands out and works well with the atmosphere I was trying to make. The colours used was very pale tones of the colour orange- I just slide the colour wheel around till i found the right shade which worked with each individual image.

I tried a lot of images with many different phrases to see what would work well- some of the images didn't work at all with the text so they were discarded from the pile.

There was also another idea which was different from these images which was discarded. When I was taking these images in the woods I found a tree which was splitting in two but them the branches at the top connected again- which i though perfectly symbolised the story on who the lovers were pulled apart but the found each other again but only briefly before the death of one. I thought that I could make a collage but it didn't really work out the way I wanted too but it made me realise that I was on the right track with the text on the images idea.

In my last 1-2-1 session for this project with Jonathan, he said how he finds the images where the text and the images doesn't really match- where there is limited connection between them. I also found that when I looked over my work that that was the case for me too, the images where there was a heart and the words was "love" or something wasn't as strong and quite predictable. I found that I didn't have much images where I could apply this tactic to so I decided to do a last minute photoshoot. However, this time adding subjects to the images (like in my dirty drawings and Seamus had mentioned it too). This shoot was a bit more difficult to do as I had to think more carefully about the positioning of the people and what that portray. After a few staged images I told the sitters to either run to each or walk around a tree to try and get a "candid" images even though it's not technically a candid but that was what I wanted to try and create. This technique was more successful as the sitters were more relaxed and not as stiff in the images. There was only a few images which I deemed strong enough to have text added to them as some of them was the case of the idea being more successful in my head than in frame.

Here were the images which I thought was the most successful:

Again, I used the same font as before and the same colour scheme for the text.

I love how the images turned out- it is completely different to what I usually produce. If you take a look at the last project- the postcards- you can see the difference between the dark of this work and light of my "go-to" work.

I had fun completing this project- again, it's completely different to what I have done before and that stimulated me and my ideas in a different way allowing me to produce different work.
