Experimenting with Shapes

Writer's picture: SHANNON ROCHESHANNON ROCHE

Over the past few weeks I have been gathering images.

So far I have gathered together images of Paths, Signs, Buildings and people in Bath. However, here I am mostly focusing in on the people and the buildings as I am not sure how far I want to take the other images.

With the building’s created a specific composition- where the buildings are on the right side of the frame and the rest of the frame is filled with sky. I did this so there would be no distractions from the subject but also I was thinking about how all the images would work together. For example, all the Buildings in Bath will be on the right side and the buildings in Maesteg will be on the left side- so it kind of creates a outline around the images.

Over the past couple of days I have been printing out the images on a small scale and playing around with how I would layout the typologies in my sketchbook. And experimented with scale and positioning, the results are shown below:

I find that a few of these layouts work well. However, I cant use all of them. I quite like the circle one however, maybe not exactly in that design, maybe images could fill the inside of the circle to make the most of the space.

I also think that the one where the portraits are positioned in a line- it could be very successful. I also find the fact that they are different sizes in the line- it makes it interesting to look at and it's quite satisfying.

So far, I am drifting towards the circle and the line typologies. However, i cannot be 100% certain yet as I only have half my images so far but I think that it’ll work out.

After thinking and picturing the layouts I thought that I would try and draw out what the whole work would look like on the wall. Again this is only a rough plan:

I used black tape to create the outline of the shapes. I think that the circles on the outside works better together than the circles on the inside. This is because the lines in the middle act as a connection between the two circles. This could become symbolical as it could become the connection between the two communities and could ties all the images together!
