I'm not sure how I feel about borders- I'm not fond of the feeling of being enclosed in a space and that reflects in my work as I hardly work with borders. However, this typology project has got me thinking about borders as I have to use them to create the typology shape before turning them invisible as they help me make sure that the images are in the right position.
I began to dabble with all the different types of borders when creating my sign typologies.
Here they are without borders:
And here are some with all different types of borders:
I chose the colours black and blue to experiment with as I felt like they would be the ones which best fit the aesthetic of the images and my overall theme. I picked blue because in most of these images and other images in the project the blue sky is the main colour and sometimes only colour in frame.
In these experiments I played with the line thickness, colour, and missing lines. For example, in some images the thin line border is only on the inside borders/outside borders. I thought it would be interesting to see how highlighting different lines- like the inside lines which aren't usually highlighted- would affect the image and how the eyes roll across the image. Are some images more seen than others due to where the thickest lines are? I think that that is true as the thick lines attract the eye more than the thins ones as they are more bold and portray more of statement.
Although these borders are all interesting in their own way, i'm still not sure that I want to include borders in my final piece as even though they are eye catching they can also be quite distracting. If I was going to pick It would be the dark black line- however I would only put in down the columns not rows as, for me, this is the layout that guides my eye through all the images more effectively than the others.
Thinking about how I want to display my images on the wall, I would have to use tape to create the border line as I don't want to use frames as, in my opinion, they wouldn’t match the aesthetics and shapes of the work. Also they would be too difficult to find a frame to match the size of my images.
I am planning to print of some images to play around with the layout of them on the wall. I think I will also use the black tape at Locksbrook to further expand my experimentation with borders as even though I am not 100% sure if it will be successful or not, maybe seeing it up on the wall will help me finalise my decision.
