This is the first photomontage I created. I was inspired by Clet Abraham as I used his signs to help portray my message. I was also inspired by John Stezaker slightly as I got the idea of putting the signs over the models heads from his photomontages where he puts images over people's faces.
I wanted to create an interesting composition with a very dramatic and deep contrast between what people like to know about and what they should know about. I choose models as I was thinking about how people almost run away from the truth which is similar to the word "runway" which models walk down. I also chose models as I always see them on my social media and on the news, talking about their love lives or what beach they were sunbathing on. I feel like the media should cover more on the issues in the world rather on what celebrity had a McDonalds.
When choosing the signs, I went for the more political ones- like the first one which represents the BLM movement. The second ones empathises the refugee crisis, there’s also one about pollution and climate change, and one about the lack of food in some counties. All important issues which are in the media less than they should be.
I wanted to create a contrast and I believe I have done that successfully with a simple composition to not distract from the matter at hand.
This was my second photomontage. My main idea was to get "problematic" leaders and then subvert something about them. At the beginning i wanted to have something like smoke or explosions coming out of their heads but I found that removing their eyes was more effective and unique. I chose to make this edit choppy and messy as it is more eye catching that way and it can be interpreted in certain ways.
I was playing around when I decided to do this- I mainly did this as it is quite comedic as these people were/ are important government officials. The deeper meaning behind this image came after, I was mainly doing this as i found it funny but reflecting on it, it can represent how these people refused to see or was oblivious to the issues they caused. However, that wasn’t the intended meaning behind this image- it is up to interpretation.
Overall, I do think that is photomontage is successful as it shows subversion quite clearly and the composition of the image is very unique.
I wanted to make a photomontage on social media as it is a big part of today's society and I wanted to subvert it. I wasn’t sure where to begin though as it is a big topic, so to help me zone in I just looked through my social media. I found this image from a couple of months ago. A bit of backstory from this image, I was on a night out in Cardiff for my A Level results day (even though I didn't sit any exams because of Covid) and here I am in place called The Alchemist. When this photo was being taken, all that was going through my head is that this was going to be a good picture to post on Instagram.
I wanted to expose, not just myself but our generation, that we do things which will look good for other people, look good for our social media. Many people will not admit to having "social media on the brain" which why this photomontage comes under the topic of subvert- I am going against the the norm of ignoring how social media has infiltrated our minds. This photomontage is a poke at our social media based society.
This photomontage goes against the typical traditional idea of a photomontage in my opinion. My idea which started this image was the idea of Rosa Parks on a modern bus. I then started thinking about other influential people who have sadly passed away and I put them all on the same bus. I purposely left some spaces to make room for new influential people.
I like this photomontage as it is very unique and different. It catches your eye as you don't expect to see these people on a bus (especially a cartoon one) and it makes you think about what they all achieved in their lives.
These two photomontages are meant to have comedic aspects to them- as they are very unexpected. I made these to experiment and push the expected roles. Each part of the montage don't really link which is what makes this photomontage funny and eye catching. For example, the baby putting his middle finger up- it is clearly not the baby's hand as it is hairy and it is a slightly different skin colour. This subverts the idea of when putting images together they are meant to match. The same for when the heads are on the wrong body, I didn’t even attempt to blend in and make it look as natural as possible- this adds to the unusual and unexpected atmosphere of these images.
Lastly, this photomontage subverts the ideas of portraiture. The subject isn't following the rules of thirds and the background is tinted green which is typically not a complimentary colour. Also, I cut out a rough snippet of my cat's face and I placed it on top of my face but upside down too. Further subverting the ideas of portraiture.
